Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
