Gus Hansen enjoyed a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to achieve last game in three of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors in the world. While wagering on online poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. He regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Gus usually buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I accept that Hansen is an amazing poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the min buy in.
Playing for the min takes almost all of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is presumed to be 1 of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the total amount. I think tv can alter our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest poker players in the world could be guys you have never heard of before. Gus can be seen participating in online poker on Full Tilt. He usually participates in high stakes omaha hold’em and Holdem. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in money games?
