Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker player on the planet by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the negative feedback from other people destroy his dream of being one of the best poker players on the planet.
He began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
