Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
