Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
