Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high hand, and several trying for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
