Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
